Phil Spencer says delaying Starfield to 2023 was the ‘right thing to do’

November was a busy month for game releases, and if Bethesda had continued with its Starfield plans, the month would have been even busier with the release of star field. The game, alongside Arkane red fallwere finally postponed to 2023and according to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, it was the right decision to make.

“We have experience of shipping games too soon, but looking back, when you look at a game like Starfield, which took so long and so much investment in new IP from the team, the decision to give the team time to build the game that they think they should build is the right thing to do,” Spencer told The edge.

According to Spencer, Microsoft wanted to make sure that Bethesda and Arkane could deliver the best games possible, as Starfield and Redfall will be the first true Xbox console-exclusive releases following the $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax. “I just wanted to make sure these teams felt like they had the support they could get from Xbox. Maybe they feel the benefit of being part of a larger organization that has other sources of income and other things that might be useful.”

Spencer had a few more interesting stories to share during his appearance on The Verge’s podcast, as he again commented The future of Call of Duty on PlayStation and explained how the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is focused on mobile games like Candy Crush. In a previous interview, Spencer mentioned that Starfield won’t feel like a big-budget Skyrim set in space, though fans can expect classic Bethesda gameplay elements like dialog options.

Starfield and redfall vampire hunting game are currently slated to launch in the first half of 2023, and although they are exclusive to the Xbox Series X console | S, you can also play them on PC.
