Uruguay 0-0 South Korea: World Cup 2022 – as it happened | World Cup 2022

Key events

Which means I’m afraid that’s the end of this blog. Thank you all for your company and feedback – sorry I can’t use them all – and enjoy the next two games. Two games! Peace outside.

And with that came Jonathan Wilson’s report, So here is :

“Are you seriously suggesting that Peak-Cavani ‘wasn’t half the player’ that Peak-Suarez was?” asks Mark Dunlop. “To quote Danny from Withnail & I – ‘very, very stupid words, man’.”

Look, my hair is my antennae. They pick up signals from the cosmos. And they tell me Peak Cavani was a very good player, but Peak Suarez was one of the most devastating players I’ve ever seen.

A thought for you: could it be that we are seeing goalless draws because the teams are fit enough – physically and mentally – to defend well for 90 minutes?

“I think Cavani posed more of a threat than Suarez in the few minutes he was there,” says Colum Fordham, “writing from Napoli where Edinson Cavani was revered as a hero. On the front of the flag, some of Napoli’s monarchist revivalist fan groups have added the rather garish Bourbon flag dripping with golden tassels to the simple light blue of the team colors and donkey mascot with rather alarming results.

I agree on Cavani. He wasn’t half the player Suarez was in his prime, but he’s aged much better.

Please sir, I want more.

In the last World Cup, we had a goalless draw in 63 games; so far here, we’ve had four. I don’t think any of them were stinkers, but there was too little attack and base skill zest.

FULL TIME: Uruguay 0-0 South Korea

Uruguay approached the goal by knocking twice into the wood, but Uijo should have scored for Korea as well; the truth is that neither team showed enough quality to score, and Group H looks to be tight.

90+7 mins Varela runs at Jinsu, who dives past him; is absent ! But no, Jinsu bought the free kick – it’s a superb defense.

90+6 mins Uruguay win a corner on the left… which De La Cruz pumps into Seunggyu’s arms.

90+5 minutes Uruguay put themselves under pressure with this performance – they weren’t positive enough I don’t think – and if there is a positive result when Korea play Ghana they might need something of the game against Portugal.

90+4 mins Valverde played well tonight but the way his team set up didn’t give him enough leeway to do enough.

90+2 mins Cho is cleared down the left… thinks he’s cleared down the left, but here comes Valverde, who continues his pursuit before slipping in and celebrating as if he’s scored.

90+1 mins A terrible clearance from Rochet is picked up by Cho, who finds Son, and from the edge of the box he drives right past it; it was a tough chance, but we’ve seen him take some tougher ones. We’ll have an extra seven minutes which Danny Murphy thinks is hard to grasp, but the truth is we should have the same thing every time.

90 minutes Valverde, who looked likely when on the ball, kicks it out from 30 yards, peeks, then absolutely explodes in a shrill drive that slams the near post – although I think Seunggyu had covered.

89 minutes Cho glares glaringly at Big Jose Gimenez, who collapses; Cho is mysteriously reserved.

88 minutes A player who has never played for Man United is replaced by a player who has hardly ever played for Man United, Varela for Pellistri.

88 minutes Bentancur throws a ball into the box from the right touchline and Cavani stretches every fiber of his neck and skull for a touch, but the ball falls past the far post despite Vina’s best efforts to catch it.

86 minutes This is Uruguay pushing the pace now, but they lacked midfield trickery and pushing wide.

84 minutes “Hello from the cold north”, says Anders Naess. “Off topic, but for Morse-based heraldry it’s hard to beat the Svalbard Arms Shield.”

Heraldry always reminds me of 15-1. One of my buddies was there and has an absurd general knowledge, but received two questions which William G preceded with this very word.

83 minutes Pien Meulensteen – who did a very good job I think – refers to the Haitch group, which makes me think that I solved a problem within the England team. Harry Maguire can be Aitch and Harry Kane can be Haitch. You are welcome, guys.

81 minutes Cavani comes out from the front and holds on well – that ability makes him a better option than Suarez, I think – and finds Nunez, on his left, who tucks inside and cowers in search of the far post, while Cavani tosses hair looking to give a little deflection. Both fail.

80 minutes Danny Murphy is disappointed Uruguay and me too. There has been a lack of dynamism and risk in their game and I also wonder if they suffer, as Portugal did at the Euros, from the manager choosing an aging genius over the crew.

79 minutes Double change for UruguayDe La Cruz and Vina on for Vecino and Olivera.

77 months I said I was sure we were going to score a goal, but excuse me, I interrupt, a turn around the corner from Inbeom and Cho, shooting in the front, has space ! He watches, then attempts a low shot from 20 yards which he drags a touch, so he scuttles a yard or two wide from the near post.

75 minutes Son isolates Caceres and shows Pellistri how it’s done, an inside jump inciting weight shift that allows him to dive on the outside, Bentancur forced to clear his low cross.

75 minutes Triple change for Korea, Lee, cho and Son on, Uijo, Sangho and Jaesung off.
