The Playstation VR 2 will be expensive technology. But the software could also be more expensive than the competition’s offerings in some cases.
At the beginning of November, Sony dropped the bomb: Playstation VR 2 will cost 600 euros / $550. Those who want to buy the device as a bundle with the flagship Horizon game Call of the Mountain will have to shell out 650 euros / $600.
The Playstation 5, which powers the high-end headset, will cost another €450/$400 – if you can even get the device at that price given ongoing supply shortages.
About $1,000console and headset costs are relatively high compared to cheaper alternatives like Meta Quest 2 and Pico 4. In return, Playstation VR 2 offers more modern technology and VR games that could make standalone headsets old in terms of graphics and scope.
Some VR games are already more expensive on the Playstation Store
You will likely have to pay more for VR games in Sony’s store than on other VR platforms like the Meta Quest Store and Steam. While it’s too early to make a definitive judgement, a look at the EU Playstation Store shows that Sony’s VR platform could become the most expensive, at least on average.
To date, 14 titles are referenced on the Playstation Store and 11 of them have received a price tag. Eight of the 14 VR games are already available for Meta Quest and Steam.
virtual reality game | Playstation Store | Meta Quest Store | Steam |
Cities: VR Enhanced Edition | €29.99 | €29.99 | – |
Cosmological high | €35.99 | €29.99 | €24.99 |
Demoo | €39.99 | €29.99 | €24.99 |
Jurassic World Aftermath Collection | Price unknown | 36.98 euros (including part 2) | – |
Star Wars: Tales from the Edge of the Galaxy | €49.99 | 34.99 euros (last call included) | – |
Sprawling | €24.99 | €24.99 | €24.50 |
TWS: H&S – Chapter 2: Retribution | €39.99 | €39.99 | Price unknown |
Zenith: the last city | €26.99 | €29.99 | €24.99 |
Cosmological high, Demoo and Star Wars: Tales from the Edge of the Galaxy Cost 5 to 15 euros more in the Playstation Store than in the Meta Quest Store. The first two are also available on Steam, where they’re even cheaper than in the Meta Quest Store.
Cities: RV, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners 2 and Sprawling costs the same as in the Quest Store. Only the VR MMORPG Zenith: The Last City is cheaper. This could be a mistake: the VR game is more expensive on the American Playstation Store than on the European Playstation Store. Normally the opposite is more likely to be the case.
PSVR 2 buyers will have to dig deep into their pockets
The following six PSVR 2 games have not (yet) been released on other VR platforms:
- Horizon Call of the Mountain – 69.99 Euro
- The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR – €39.99
- Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue – 29.99 euros
- The Light Brigade – 24.99 euros
- Ultra Firewall – Price Unknown
- CROSSFIRE: Sierra Squad – price unknown
Note that exclusive titles like the Switchback VR roller coaster shooter and Horizon Call of the Mountain costs between 40 and 70 (!) Euros. There are only a handful of VR games in the Meta Quest Store that hit the $40 mark.
Those entering the PSVR2 hardware ecosystem may also need to dig deeper into their pockets for the software. That wouldn’t be a big surprise, as VR games for the first Playstation VR 2 were also more expensive on average than on other VR platforms. Normal games have also been more expensive for Playstation gamers for quite some time.
