The story of Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the most engaging on PS4, and Guerrilla Games expands on the premise by really going off the rails. It’s pure sci-fi madness with invaders from outer space, new technologies and feats unattainable by normal human beings. The story has its believers, but it also has its skeptics. The stories of the tribes and much of the secondary content are widely accepted to be of high quality, with stories worth watching until the end, even if they are unrelated to the main plot. . Even if you don’t like where the story is going, there’s no denying the developer is in on the story, with a third game ready to rock.

Trails from Zero may be an older RPG – debuting on the PSP in 2010 – but its narrative has a timeless quality to it, helped greatly by Falcom’s trademark world-building efforts. The entire game takes place in and around the town of Crossbell, and over its 50 hour runtime you get to know the state’s streets and buildings almost as well as its fantastic cast of characters. Zero does an enviable job of telling you personal stories before dragging you into a much more dramatic overarching plot. Captivating stuff when it’s at its best.

Because as unrealistic as the premise of A Plague Tale: Requiem is, its story may hit hard near home. The sibling duo of Amicia and Hugo return for another life-threatening adventure that’s utterly depressing at almost every turn. Nothing ever goes right for them, culminating in an ending that is sure to bring tears to the surface. As heartbreaking as it may be, Asobo Studio’s sequel is utterly captivating. Every facet of the experience is designed to enhance the plot, with touching conversations and emotional encounters. It’s miserable as much as it’s thrilling. A fantastic follow-up based on a story from the French studio.

First thought of as a rebooted trilogy, God of War Ragnarok had the task of packing two story-worthy games into one gigantic experience. About 40 hours later, Santa Monica Studio had told the biggest video game story of the year. It sees Kratos, Atreus and their friends battle the cataclysmic event that is Ragnarok as well as those who attempt to bring about its final days. A wonderful cast of new characters quickly become the stars of the series, and with unforgettable moments that play with your expectations throughout the story, the game surprises as much as it delights. A very nice conclusion to the Norse arc of the God of War franchise.
