Our Game of the Year coverage continues with the Best PS5, PS4 RPG of 2022of which a top four was compiled by the Push Square editorial team. This category crowns the best PS5, PS4 titles in the role-playing genre. At the end, we will list some honorable mentions.

Square Enix faithfully remasters the PSP spin-off Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the modern audience on the back of Final Fantasy VII Remake, allowing newcomers to learn more about Zack and co. Thanks to some neat gameplay updates, the game controls better than ever both in combat and out of combat. There are still some nonsensical stories and bonkers dialogue, but that’s part of the charm at this point. While we wait Final Fantasy VII Revival to bang on PS5 is more than setting aside around 20 hours to find out what Square Enix has done to Sony’s first portable system.

The Guerrilla Games joint is one of those titles that straddles a lot of different things, doing just enough to be considered a part of it all. With a decent amount of character customization, engaging side quests to complete, and a straightforward dialogue system, Horizon Forbidden West is an enjoyable RPG you could spend tons of hours in. Exploring the vast open world and learning more about its people through optional activities that expand on the main narrative, the PS5, PS4 sequel is an experience more than worth spending time on.

There’s no such thing as a Falcom RPG, and Trails from Zero is arguably one of Japan’s best developers. By focusing exclusively on the technologically advanced town of Crossbell and the people who inhabit it, the game weaves together a tight story filled with memorable characters – while contributing greatly to the franchise’s overall world-building. Add a rock-solid turn-based combat system and you have a superb role-playing adventure.

Elden Ring doesn’t have the easiest story to follow. It cannot boast of meaningful dialogue options. And its side quests can be so vague that you’d need an online walkthrough to even know where to start some of them. Why then is Elden Ring the best PS5, PS4 RPG of 2022? Because of literally everything else. With an unfathomable sense of freedom, a ridiculously long list of build options, and characters as interesting as they are mysterious, the FromSoftware epic is the definition of role-playing this year. An outstanding achievement that many RPGs will borrow from for years to come. Elden Ring sets the new standard.
