Switchback VR Update Patch Notes List Many Improvements, More Updates Planned

After missing its initial windowthe long awaited Dark pictures: Switchback VR Update is outside. This patch for the PSVR2 title fixes many visual issues that were heavily criticized when it launched.

THE update patch notes are more detailed than the previous list of changes revealed by Supermassive Games. It works through the general improvements, the biggest of which is support for foveal rendering, which uses eye tracking to render the part of the screen the player is looking at at a higher resolution. Supermassive claims there’s also better temporal anti-aliasing, textures, lighting, effects for wet objects, and general effects, to name a few. Most of these changes are visual in nature, but the studio has also added dynamic hit reactions to enemies.

These are just a few of the rumored upgrades, as Supermassive has detailed some improvements seen at each level. While quite massive, the studio explained that more support is on the way, but didn’t detail what’s in store.

Players have been waiting for this update since its launch in March. Gamers and reviewers almost unanimously denounced its muddy or blurry visuals to the point where Supermassive released a statement The next day.

After months of vague updates, the studio noted that it missed its goal of releasing the update in late June and was targeting the first two weeks of July. This window has passedwhich prompted Supermassive Community Manager Georgina Howlett to say that, despite 15 days later, the team meant two calendar weeks.

  • Introduced FSR (flexible scaled rasterization) and FR (foveated rendering) support to significantly improve visual quality.
  • Enable Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) for a smoother picture
  • Pass optimization throughout the game to improve performance and prevent objects and textures from “jumping” when the cart moves.

  • Fixed an issue where subtitles would be visible in the pause menu if the subtitle settings were adjusted while the dialogue was playing.

  • Inauguration trip
    • New and improved fire effects
    • Fixed several cases of enemies sneaking into the cart.
    • Fixed multiple instances of enemies floating above the ground.
    • Adjusted floating objects throughout the level.
    • Fixed an issue with the chain link fence in the first area changing opacity as you approach it.
    • Adjusted collision on puzzle assets so only valves can be pulled to trigger them.
    • Fixed an issue where enemies were not close enough to the cart to cause damage.
    • Adjusted the light flash timings when encountering after the “meat tunnel”.
    • Adjusted the speed of enemies when encountering the boat.
    • Reworked enemy paths and tasks in the last fight for better timing.
    • Adjusted curtain material to prevent see through. Fixed an issue where firing the Grenade Launcher at the Rat Swarm would crash the game.
    • Fixed an issue with gaps in the water.
    • Fixed an issue where an enemy left alive behind the cart and could be heard throughout the level, even if it was far away.
    • Fixed collisions so the Rat Swarm no longer gets stuck on the track.
  • In the heart of the ship
    • Fixed an issue where dying after the first branching track would not reset the level.
    • Adjusted floating and clipping assets throughout the level.
    • Fixed an issue with the Blood Rain visual where sound effects were not playing correctly in the ship’s kitchen.
    • Fixed an issue with broken helicopter blades appearing before the helicopter crashes at the end of the level.
    • Adjusted the timings of the last boss attack encounter to prevent the player from being injured too early.
    • Improved demon dog animations.
    • Balance fixes for demon dog fights.
    • Added rain haptics on the last outer section.
    • Fixed an issue where we could see an invisible barrel exploding when the boss died.

  • General
    • Several fog tweaks and fixes in both levels for better visual quality
    • New and improved tree and foliage in both levels
    • New and improved fire effects in both levels
    • Added more dynamic hit reactions to enemies.
  • Abandon all hope
    • Fixed an issue in the Black Cat bar where some objects were misaligned.
    • Made the vibration of the helmet more intense during the bus accident.
    • Adjusted collisions on objects to make shooting easier.
    • Adjusted giant bat trajectories in the tunnel.
    • Adjusted fire visual effects so they no longer clip with walls inside the burning house.
  • Burning Trials
    • Lighting improvements throughout the level
    • The police station demon can now be properly interrupted during its attack.
    • Improved the visual appearance of the UV decal.
    • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused dolls to crawl on the ceiling or walls.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented the last demon from attacking during the final phase of the fight.

    • Fixed an issue where repeatedly shooting one of the animatronics with the stun gun would push it through walls.
